Do I need solar panels to have a home battery?

No — solar panels are not required. You can charge your battery directly from the grid when electricity is cheaper, typically overnight, and use that stored energy during the more expensive daytime period. The key is a suitable electricity tariff and a battery sized for your home.

This lets you benefit from cheaper-rate electricity even if your roof is unsuitable for solar, or you simply don’t want panels. If you already have solar, a compatible battery can also store surplus generation for later use.

I have an EV tariff — can I use that cheap rate for my home too?

Yes, if your tariff allows it. Where the cheaper rate applies to your home’s electricity supply, you can charge both your EV and your home battery during the same cheap-rate window. The battery then stores that lower-cost electricity to help power your home later in the day.

We’ll check the tariff’s eligibility rules and charging window, along with your electrical supply and the power needed to charge both at once. The aim is to make more of the cheap electricity available to you, without assuming every EV tariff works in exactly the same way.

What is the difference between the modular and all-in-one batteries?

The blue Solplanet Ai-LB-G3 system uses a modular battery and a separate ASW inverter — you choose compatible storage and inverter sizes together. The charcoal DX all-in-one integrates its battery and inverter into one unit; our current listed models use a 5 kW inverter.

They are separate product families with different dimensions, protection ratings and operating limits. Compare both product lines or see them side by side to scale, and check the exact model named in your proposal.

What is the difference between kW and kWh?

kWh describes energy; kW describes power. A battery’s kWh capacity tells you how much energy it holds. Power in kW tells you how quickly energy can be supplied or charged. A steady 1 kW load uses 1 kWh in an hour.

More storage can extend running time. More output can help with several appliances at once, but usable output depends on both the battery and the inverter. See the inverter guide.

Do I need to replace my existing EV charger?

Usually, the starting point is to keep your existing charger and consider a battery-only installation. We’ll review how the charger, battery and home loads share your electrical supply and available cheap-rate hours.

The optional DX charger is there for households that need a new charger. We do not assume an existing charger has to be replaced simply because you are adding a home battery.

Battery size & performance

What size battery and inverter do I need?

We offer batteries from 10 kWh to 40 kWh, with compatible inverter options from 3.68 kW to 10 kW. Think of battery capacity as how much energy you can store, and inverter output as how much power the system can deliver at one time.

The DX all-in-one range combines 10, 15 or 20 kWh storage with a built-in 5 kW inverter. The ASW range offers 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 kWh storage, with selected inverter sizes for each battery.

Our savings calculator only offers combinations in our price list. It suggests the battery size that pays for itself fastest at your level of use, and you can then choose any inverter listed for that size. Very high daily demand needs a tailored system assessment.

The largest battery is not automatically the best choice. We’ll also consider appliances running together, overnight charging time, your electrical supply and future needs. Daily usage alone cannot confirm the right inverter, so the online suggestion is a starting point for your assessment.

What are the dimensions of the battery and inverter?

Each Ai-LB-G3 battery module is 630 mm wide × 320 mm high × 185 mm deep. Two modules (the 10 kWh package) are 640 mm high; three are 960 mm; four are 1,280 mm; five are 1,600 mm. The 25 kWh package (25.6 kWh nominal) is the largest single stack. Each module weighs 46 kg, plus a 2.6 kg base.

The H-S2 inverter is 483 mm wide × 455 mm high × 193.5 mm deep and weighs 25 kg. The 8/10 kW SH inverter is 484 × 679 × 230 mm and weighs 34.5 kg. The DX all-in-one cabinets are 675 mm wide × 200 mm deep, and 1,210 / 1,575 / 1,940 mm tall for 10 / 15 / 20 kWh.

These are product dimensions, not total installation space — mounting, cables, access and required clearances need extra room. See every size in 3D against a doorway.

How much of the battery’s capacity can I actually use?

Nominal capacity is the manufacturer’s stated stored energy. Usable energy is measured within the permitted operating range. For Ai-LB-G3, the manufacturer lists 9.72, 14.59, 19.45 and 24.32 kWh usable for the 10, 15, 20 and 25 kWh packages, under its specified test conditions.

Our savings calculator uses the rounded package names (10, 15, 20 kWh…) and assumes the battery can shift up to that amount each day, so treat its result as an estimate. Neither figure is a promise of identical energy delivered to appliances: losses, settings and conditions matter.

Can a larger battery system be split into two shorter stacks?

Yes, a two-stack layout can be considered for the larger modular systems. The supplier’s suggested arrangement for a 30 kWh package is two 15 kWh stacks, each approximately 630 × 960 × 185 mm. For 40 kWh, the suggestion is two 20 kWh stacks, each approximately 630 × 1,280 × 185 mm.

This can help when available height or the preferred appearance makes one tall unit impractical. Each position still needs suitable mounting, access, cabling and the manufacturer’s required clearances, and the system needs space for its separate inverter. Two shorter stacks are not a promise of less total installation space.

We confirm the final layout, compatible equipment and approved interconnections at survey. The 35 kWh arrangement is confirmed individually. See the layouts to scale or ask us about your available space.

Can I add more battery capacity later?

The Ai-LB-G3 design is modular, with up to five 5.12 kWh modules (25.6 kWh) per tower in its datasheet. Expansion must use an approved configuration and be assessed against the inverter, wiring, battery compatibility and available space.

Tell us about likely future needs before you order. For 30–40 kWh packages, we’ll confirm the complete arrangement rather than assume all modules can form a single tower. Expansion cost and suitability are confirmed when quoted.

What type of battery chemistry is used?

Both the Ai-LB-G3 and the DX all-in-one systems use lithium iron phosphate, also called LiFePO4 or LFP. Their control systems manage battery operation, and the G3 datasheet also lists integrated fire suppression and electrical protections.

These features do not make any battery risk-free. The exact equipment must be installed, located and operated in line with the manufacturer’s requirements.

I have a heat pump — can I still have a battery?

Yes. A battery can form part of a home energy setup that includes a heat pump. Because heat pumps can increase electricity demand, choosing enough storage and the right inverter is particularly important.

We’ll look at your heating demand, seasonal usage and the other appliances you use at the same time. Inverter options up to 10 kW give us choices for higher-demand homes, subject to compatibility and your electrical supply. We’ll assess the whole setup rather than assume an average summer day represents your winter needs.

What happens if I use more energy than the battery can supply?

When connected to the grid, the home draws electricity from the grid if the battery runs low or demand exceeds the available system output. That electricity is charged at the rate applying at that time.

That is why storage, output and overnight charging time all matter. The calculator assumes a full overnight charge each day; it cannot guarantee every real day will be supplied entirely at the night rate.

Does 6,000 cycles mean the battery is guaranteed to last that long?

No. The Ai-LB-G3 figure is a manufacturer cycle-life test, not a warranty or a guaranteed number of years. The stated conditions are 0.5C charge/discharge, 25°C, one cycle per day, 90% depth of discharge and 70% end-of-life capacity. Real operation varies.

Warranty duration, capacity commitments, exclusions and any other limits come from the applicable written warranty. The 6,000-cycle figure should not be transferred to a different battery family.

Inverters, solar & backup

Does the 6 kW inverter deliver 6 kW from the battery?

For the ASW H-S2, maximum battery charging and discharging is 5 kW, including on the 6 kW AC model. The AC inverter rating and the battery-port power rating describe different things.

The 8 kW ASW SH supports up to 8 kW battery charge/discharge, and the 10 kW version up to 10 kW, subject to the battery configuration and installation limits. Compare the models before choosing an upgrade.

Can the calculator tell me the exact inverter I need?

It shows every inverter priced for your chosen battery size, so you can compare the cost of each option. Daily energy use helps choose capacity, but it does not reveal your maximum simultaneous demand, the length of your charging window or your electrical supply limits.

We review those factors before confirming the inverter. Tell us about high-demand equipment and planned changes, including a heat pump, EV or solar. Read what we check.

Can you connect the battery to my existing solar?

In many cases, yes. Connection to an existing compatible solar system is £300. This can let you store surplus solar generation for later, instead of buying electricity from the grid when your panels are no longer generating.

We’ll check your existing panels, inverter and connections first. If changes or upgrades are needed, we’ll explain the options and agree the costs before work proceeds. Even if connecting to your existing solar is not practical, the battery can still work by charging from the grid on a suitable tariff.

Will my battery work during a power cut?

It can, with the correct optional backup setup. We can install an EPS (Emergency Power Supply) to keep selected essential circuits powered during a grid outage — for example lighting, refrigeration and other agreed essentials, depending on the system and available stored energy.

EPS is not whole-home backup and is not included in the standard installation. It requires a dedicated backup consumer unit and additional wiring, so it is quoted separately. We’ll discuss what you want to keep running, confirm the circuits and loads the system can support, and explain the limits before you commit.

How long will the battery last in a power cut?

It depends on the stored charge when the outage starts and the consumption of the selected backup circuits. A lower combined load can run for longer; high-demand appliances use stored energy more quickly. The backup output has a power limit as well as an energy limit.

We’ll discuss the essential circuits you want supported, confirm what your chosen system can supply and quote the required EPS equipment separately. We do not promise a fixed backup duration.

Do the savings estimates include solar generation or export payments?

No. The calculator models buying electricity at a cheaper overnight rate and using stored energy later. It does not include solar generation or export income.

If you have solar, the best operation depends on your generation, self-consumption and import/export tariff. We’ll consider those with you separately before confirming the system and likely benefits.

Installation & everyday use

What is included in the price and standard installation?

Your battery system is supplied, delivered and professionally installed. Our savings calculator uses our current standard system prices for the battery and inverter combination you choose.

Standard installation includes up to 15 metres of surface-run cable and up to 3 metres of trunking. An optional EV charger adds £300, and connecting to existing compatible solar PV adds £300. The DNO application is included.

We’ll assess your property and confirm the installation scope, VAT treatment and any additional work in your written quote. If the property needs work beyond the standard installation, we’ll explain and agree the additional cost before proceeding.

Can the battery and inverter be installed outside?

The G3 battery and ASW inverters have an IP66 enclosure rating; the DX all-in-one has IP65. Their datasheets support indoor and outdoor use, but the proposed location must still meet the product’s installation and environmental requirements.

Our survey checks mounting, access, cables, required clearances and exposure at your property. An IP rating does not mean equipment can be placed anywhere.

Does cold weather affect the battery?

The operating limits differ by model. The G3 datasheet specifies charging from −8 to 58°C and discharging from −18 to 58°C. The DX all-in-one specifies charging from 0 to 50°C and discharging from −15 to 50°C.

These are operating ranges, not a guarantee of unchanged capacity or power at every temperature. We assess the proposed location and follow the product requirements. Do not assume the inverter’s wider temperature range is also the battery’s range.

How much noise does the equipment make?

The H-S2 inverter datasheet lists a typical 30 dB noise figure and natural-convection cooling. The DX all-in-one lists less than 25 dB with natural cooling. The SH inverter uses smart cooling; its datasheet does not give a noise figure.

We consider location and nearby living spaces at survey, and will help you choose a suitable position.

Can I see what my battery is doing?

Yes — through the system’s app. You can monitor your home’s electricity use, battery charging and discharging, stored energy and usage history. Solar generation is also shown where it applies to your setup.

This helps you see where your electricity is coming from and how the battery is working for your home. We’ll explain the monitoring available with your chosen system at handover.

Does the system need Wi-Fi?

Monitoring needs the communication setup appropriate to your model. The H-S2 datasheet describes app/portal monitoring through a Wi-Fi stick; the larger SH inverter supports Wi-Fi or wired LAN dongle options. The DX all-in-one datasheet lists Wi-Fi as optional.

We’ll confirm the connection and equipment supplied, and consider signal availability at the planned installation position. The home battery and optional EV charger may use different apps and connections; we will explain both at handover.

How long does installation take?

It depends on the agreed system, cable route, electrical work and any optional solar, EV or backup connections. Your survey and proposal establish the scope, and the installation team confirms scheduling.

Manufacturer references to one-day fitting or faster assembly are not a guarantee for every property. Network approvals, additional work and product availability also affect the installation date.

What is the DNO and who deals with the grid requirements?

The Distribution Network Operator (DNO) manages the local electricity network. A battery or inverter installation may need a notification or approval, depending on the equipment and design.

We’ll identify the process required for your proposed system and handle it as part of the installation plan. A model’s listed grid standards are not a substitute for the requirements of your particular installation.

Will someone show me how to use the system?

Yes. The handover explains normal operation, charging settings and the monitoring supplied with your system. If EPS backup is included in your quote, the supported circuits and limits are made clear too.

You’ll be able to identify your equipment and its warranty information, and know how to ask for help.

EV charging

What EV charger can I add to my battery package?

Our optional DX charger is a 7 kW single-phase unit with a Type 2 cable. The datasheet specifies a 5 m cable, app controls, RFID access, scheduling and adjustable charging current. It measures 198 mm wide × 317 mm high × 93 mm deep.

The charger adds £300 to the battery package, with the exact model, scope and any additional work confirmed in writing. See the charger.

Does the EV charger use Wi-Fi or 4G?

There are two documented variants: AC007E-HP-01 has 4G and no Wi-Fi; AC007E-HP-02 has Wi-Fi and no 4G. Both list Bluetooth, Ethernet and an RS485 interface.

We’ll confirm the version supplied, connection requirements and any applicable data or service costs. Do not assume both Wi-Fi and 4G are included in one unit.

How quickly will my car charge?

The charger is rated up to 7 kW, but the actual rate is also limited by the vehicle’s onboard charger, the electrical supply and the installation settings. The energy needed depends on how much charge the car already has and how much you want to add.

We’ll discuss your mileage and overnight window when planning the installation. A charger’s rating alone cannot guarantee a particular charge time or miles added per hour.

Is dynamic load balancing included?

The charger datasheet lists a smart meter for dynamic load balancing as an option. This can adjust EV charging to the power available at the property when other appliances are operating.

It needs the right equipment and configuration. Your quote will confirm whether it is included and the cost; it does not come automatically with the standard charger add-on.

Will the charger automatically work with my smart EV tariff?

App scheduling lets you choose charging times, but it is not the same as automatic integration with an energy supplier’s smart tariff. The datasheet does not establish compatibility with every supplier, vehicle or smart charging service.

Before you rely on a particular rate or automatic service, check the supplier’s current eligibility and compatibility requirements. We’ll discuss the exact charger and battery setup proposed for your home.

Prices, savings & support

How much could a battery save me?

Your usage, tariff and system size determine the potential saving. The principle is simple: charge when electricity is cheap, store it, then use it when electricity is more expensive.

Our savings calculator uses your monthly bill or monthly kWh, plus your own day and night rates, to estimate the result for the system you choose. It assumes the battery fully recharges overnight and shifts up to its capacity each day. Charging losses, changing demand and other costs are not included, so the result is an estimate rather than a guaranteed saving.

Solar generation and export income are not included either. We’ll discuss your actual setup before confirming a recommendation.

Why does the calculator start at a night rate of 7p/kWh?

You do not need to have an overnight tariff already. Enter your current single unit rate as the day rate, or a blended average if you pay different rates: divide your usage charges in pounds by the kWh used, then multiply by 100. For example, £100 ÷ 400 kWh × 100 = 25p/kWh.

If you already have a cheaper overnight rate, enter it as the night rate. Otherwise the calculator starts with 7p/kWh as an example of what an overnight tariff can offer — it is an illustration, not a tariff offer or a guaranteed price. When you use an assumed rate, the estimate combines buying a battery with switching to a suitable tariff.

Some overnight tariffs require an EV as well as a compatible smart meter. Check eligibility, cheap hours, day rates and standing charges before switching. Read our tariff guide.

What price does the calculator show?

It shows the list price for the battery and inverter combination you choose, from our current price list, plus any EV charger or solar connection you add. All prices include standard installation and delivery.

For cash purchases, a discount applies by battery size: 5% at 15 kWh and 8% at 20 kWh and above. Finance is available at 0% interest, subject to status. Payback figures use the list price before any discount. Your written quote confirms the exact equipment, VAT treatment and any additional work.

What warranty comes with the battery, inverter and EV charger?

Our battery systems come with a 10-year product warranty, subject to the applicable written terms for the exact equipment supplied. Your proposal identifies the covered battery and inverter, the claims process and relevant conditions or exclusions. This is separate from installation workmanship cover.

The optional DX EV charger has a two-year product warranty; its datasheet lists an optional extension up to five years. Cycle-life testing does not replace warranty terms, and we do not assume every component has identical cover.

What happens after I request a quote?

We review your details, usage and selected system, then get in touch to discuss your home. A site assessment helps confirm the equipment, position and installation work needed.

You can review the written system specification, price, installation scope, payment details and warranty before deciding. Sending a quote request does not commit you to buy. Request your quote.
